Pope Francis Makes Act of Devotion to Our Lady of Fatima

The Pope celebrated Mass in St Peter’s Square on October 13 2013 in honor of the Marian Day, an event organized as part of the Year of Faith on the anniversary of the final apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima (October 13, 1917).

Pope’s Prayer about consecrating to the Virgin of Fatima, asking Mary to “entrust” everyone to her Son:

Should this be called a Consecration Prayer? or a Prayer Requesting Mary to Consecrate?

1. Was this prayer a prayer of consecration (“We consecrate the whole world to you Mary”) or only a prayer about consecration (“Mary, accept the act of consecration we perform today”)?

2. If this was an actual consecration, then where in the prayer does the consecration actually occur? And who was actually consecrated?

3. Would it be an actual consecration prayer if you only ask Mary to “entrust (deliver/consecrate) everyone to her beloved Son”, as the last line states, but you don’t actually do any consecrating yourself anywhere in the prayer?

4. Didn’t Our Lady of Fatima request that the consecration be done to her Immaculate Heart? This prayer makes no mention of her Heart.

This is a beautiful prayer to Our Lady of Fatima; I am just not sure it was a papal consecration to Mary. So, then, should we call it a consecration or merely an act of devotion?
